2013 Chevrolet Captiva
A recent facelift and sprucing-up of the interior make the Chevrolet Captiva a better proposition than it once was, but the experts still find it a difficult car to recommend in the face of more talented competition.
The interior is much improved over the old Chevrolet Captiva and the seven seats will make it a practical proposition for those who carry extra passengers (albeit small ones). The appearance and quality of the materials used has improved and both the interior and boot are spacious.

People don’t buy SUVs for sporty handling or track days, but testers say the Chevrolet Captiva still lags behind rivals in this respect. The recent revisions helped tidy the handling which is now more precise but not enough to offset the ride that doesn’t cope well with UK roads.
There are only two engines in the Captiva range, both four-cylinder 2.2-litres and both diesel-fuelled. They make decent power – even the lower-spec model produces 163bhp. This endows the Chevrolet Captiva with a decent turn of pace and both auto and manual gearboxes are well-matched to the engines. The auto can be a little slow-witted, but suits the easy-going nature of the car. Economy is good in manual versions, but less impressive with the auto.

Value for money
Price is the Chevrolet Captiva’s major stumbling block. Unless you want only five seats and front-wheel drive, you’re looking at over £27,000. In higher-spec models, the price puts it in the same class as some much more prestigious badges, and depreciation is likely to be heavy too.
There’s nothing in particular to look out for with the Chevrolet Captiva – it’s a solid, if rather average vehicle. The only note we can offer based on the reviews is that unless you can get a hefty discount, you may find more for your money elsewhere.
The Chevrolet Captiva is definitely a step in the right direction for Chevrolet and is quite an improvement over its predecessor, but unfortunately it’s now too expensive to offer the value for money that family buyers will be looking for

In 2011 it got a substantial facelift and the engine line-up changed. There is now a choice of two 2.2 litre diesel engines (called VCDi), one giving 163 bhp, the other 184 bhp.
